Over het museum
Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie has a pottery tradition said to date back to the Middle Ages. In the early 1980s, excavations in the village and its surroundings uncovered medieval kilns. A revival followed: young potters settled in the village, a pottery market was created, and the municipality bought a former oil mill to turn it into the Maison de la Terre.
In 1987, a small museum of terrailles was set up there. In 1997, landscape designers offered to lend their collection of 900 utilitarian ceramics from the Mediterranean countries. The Musée de la Poterie méditerranéenne opened to the public in July 1998, run by the association Terres de Méditerranée. In 2009, it received the Qualité Sud de France and Qualité Tourisme labels.
Today the museum occupies about 400 m² over two floors and eleven rooms in a 16th-century oil mill. It presents the collection of glazed pottery from Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie, with pipes and terraillettes from the Job Clerc manufactory, and a collection of utilitarian ceramics from around the Mediterranean.
