Over het museum
The Muséum d’histoire naturelle de Béziers has carried the “musée de France” designation since 2003. It is housed in the Caserne Saint-Jacques, a former military building erected in 1702 by the architect d’Aviler, in the heart of one of the oldest districts of the town, next to the Saint-Jacques church dating from the 11th and 12th centuries.
Its collections cover ornithology, botany, mineralogy, fossils and insects. The museum also presents the Biterrois biotope, a rich exotic collection and freshwater and saltwater aquariums housing aquatic species from the region.
According to the national register of Musées de France, the Muséum is currently not open to the public. However, the Musées de Béziers exceptionally open its storerooms, in partnership with the Société d’étude des sciences naturelles de Béziers, during free guided tours by reservation.
