Over het museum

The museum occupies the Genoese governors’ palace, also known as the Palazzo pubblico, at the heart of the Bastia citadel. The building’s origins go back to around 1380. It took on its present appearance after the return of sovereignty to the Republic of Genoa, and was fitted out in the 16th and 17th centuries, serving both as the seat of Genoese administration and as a fortification.

After sieges and bombardments, the palace became a centre of power in the 1770s and later a barracks, a function it kept until the Second World War. These uses changed the building considerably: a large courtyard staircase disappeared and an additional floor was added to the east wing. In the early 1950s the palace became a museum of Corsican ethnography.

Today the museum is devoted to the history of the town of Bastia, its links with the rest of Corsica and the Mediterranean. The permanent display includes over 300 works and objects in 19 rooms. It features around thirty Italian paintings from the Fesch bequest, shown since 2018, and the Carlini collection, donated in 1973. The palace gardens overlook the Old Port and the Tuscan archipelago. The museum also organises a major temporary exhibition every year.
