Over het museum
The museum was founded in 1994 in Montparnasse, above the railway station, thanks to a donation from the Fondation du Maréchal Leclerc de Hauteclocque and the bequest of Antoinette Sasse, a painter, resistance fighter and friend of Jean Moulin. It first brought together a memorial to General Leclerc and the Liberation of Paris, as well as a Jean Moulin museum. Since 2013 it has been part of the public institution Paris Musées; it closed its Montparnasse site on July 1, 2018 in order to move.
In 2015 the City of Paris chose to install it at Place Denfert-Rochereau, in one of the two pavilions of the former Barrière d’Enfer, built from 1785 by the architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux to collect the octroi (city tax on goods). The pavilions have been listed as historic monuments since 1907. The site also carries strong historical weight: from August 20 to 28, 1944, Colonel Rol-Tanguy, head of the French Forces of the Interior in the Paris region, set up his command post in a civil defence shelter beneath the west pavilion. The museum opened there on August 25, 2019.
The permanent display is chronological. It follows the actions of Jean Moulin and Philippe de Hauteclocque, the future General Leclerc, from the interwar years to the liberation of the territory, through the defeat of 1940, the Occupation, the internal Resistance and the battles of the Free French. More than 300 objects, original documents, photographs, and archive and testimony films illustrate it. Colonel Rol-Tanguy’s command post, twenty metres underground beneath the museum, has been open to visitors since it first opened to the public.
