Over het museum

Chana Orloff (1888–1968), sculptor of the École de Paris, lived and worked in this house-studio from 1926 until her death. The Villa Seurat, a paved cul-de-sac of artists' studios, had been created in 1924 by Jean and André Lurçat as a modern and affordable enclave; Soutine, Dalí, Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin also lived there.

The house was designed by Auguste Perret and built in six months, from April to September 1926. It is the first artist's residence whose concrete frame remains visible on the facade. The furniture by Pierre Chareau and Francis Jourdain was lost during the Second World War, but the place has kept its original atmosphere.

The museum is run by the artist's family, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and relies solely on admission fees and the shop. The site bears the “Maison des Illustres” label of the French Ministry of Culture. Visitors can see the exhibition studio where Chana Orloff received her clients, the working studio bathed in zenithal light, a gallery on the upper floor overlooking the sculptures, and the living quarters on the second floor. Almost 200 sculptures in plaster, bronze and wood are displayed where they were created.
