Over het museum
The Musée de la Préhistoire du Vercors is located in Vassieux-en-Vercors, 3.5 km from the village centre. It is run by the Vercors Regional Nature Park, holds the “Musée de France” label, and its scientific supervision is provided by the Conservation du patrimoine de la Drôme. It also holds the Qualité Tourisme label.
The route focuses on the Neolithic flint-knapping workshop of Vassieux, discovered and excavated in the 1970s and listed as a historic monument.
A redesign of the museography began in 2022. The museum was closed to individual visitors from November 1, 2025 to May 6, 2026, and reopened on May 6, 2026 with a second phase of works. The route has been completely rethought with new collections. It covers 50,000 years of human presence in the Vercors, uses flint as a common thread and is organised on three levels of reading, with an immersive audiovisual and sound projection that brings the knapping workshop back to life.

Payment in cash, by bank card, Chèques-Vacances, Carte Top Départ, Pass Région or ANCV Connect. A pass for 2 or 3 sites combines the visit with the Mémorial de la Résistance en Vercors and the departmental museum; ask at reception. The ambassador card allows free return visits all year after a first paid entry.

Reserved disabled parking spaces are next to the main entrance. A lift serves the floor, and the exhibition is accessible with pushchairs thanks to a lifting platform.

During school holidays, hands-on workshops of 1 h 30 on fire, hunting, art or the work of an archaeologist are offered to children and adults; children under 8 must be accompanied. Inside the museum, an age-appropriate activity booklet follows the displays and ends with a “time traveller” card. The outdoor trail game “Retour vers la Préhistoire” is played with a route booklet available on request at reception. Quiet areas and picnic tables around the museum.

Free, shaded car park below the museum for cars and motorhomes. A coach car park is next to the main entrance. Bicycles can be locked up around the museum.

The museum is 3.5 km from the centre of Vassieux-en-Vercors, 17 minutes from La Chapelle-en-Vercors, 45 minutes from Die, 1 h 15 from Romans, 1 h 20 from Valence, 1 h 35 from Grenoble and 2 h 30 from Lyon. Die station is about 33 km away and Valence TGV station about 70 km. Some roads are sometimes closed for works, and some tunnels are too low for buses.

Museum bookshop with books, jewellery, games and posters. Small lockable lockers; the key is requested at reception. Picnic tables near the tipi and a grassy area. Food available in the village of Vassieux. The website does not mention Wi-Fi for visitors.
