Over het museum
The museum was founded in 1905 at the initiative of Mayor Joseph Reynaud to hold objects from the excavations of the Coptic necropolis of Antinoé in Egypt. Roman and medieval remains found in Die, as well as a coin hoard from the Wars of Religion discovered in 1883, later enriched the collections.
Thanks to a bequest from Joseph Reynaud, effective in 1941, the collections were housed in his town mansion, and the new museum opened in 1949. In 1967 the town acquired a local collection assembled between 1820 and 1930, which nearly doubled the number of objects on display. The chance discovery in 1992 of an engraved Neolithic menhir about 4 m tall made it possible to create a section devoted to prehistory.
The museum holds the Musée de France label and presents the archaeology and history of the Diois across eight spaces. It also looks after the Mosaic of the Four Rivers of Paradise, an 11th-century medieval work preserved in the former episcopal palace. The museum is closed to the public for the whole of 2026 for building works.
