Over het museum
The Musée de la Targette is in Neuville-Saint-Vaast, at the locality of La Targette, in the heart of the Artois battlefields where fierce fighting took place during the Great War. It is presented as the “14-18” museum of this site and belongs to the same complex as the “Musée vivant” of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette.
The collection, spread over two levels, comprises more than 4,500 items: objects made by soldiers, authentic documents, posters, cannons, machine guns, uniforms and dozens of equipped mannequins. It also includes more than 1,000 objects found on the battlefields of Flanders, Artois and the Somme, and a major collection of gas masks.
The museum highlights what it describes as the largest public collection in France devoted to Commonwealth troops from 1914 to 1918. A reconstructed trench and a first-aid post complete the route, which is estimated to take 45 minutes.
