Over het museum
The museum is on the Notre-Dame de Lorette hill, in the commune of Ablain-Saint-Nazaire, 15 km from Arras. The site was one of the most hotly contested battlefields from October 1914 to September 1915: some 188,000 soldiers, including 100,000 French, died defending or taking the Lorette spur. The hill today holds the largest French military cemetery, a basilica, the Tour-Lanterne and, since November 11, 2014, the Anneau de la Mémoire.
The museum displays more than 3,000 items from the Great War, along with life-size reconstructions of war scenes and underground shelters, with bilingual animations in French and English. An adjoining diorama offers more than 400 period glass stereoscopic views, spread across 25 viewers and arranged by theme, such as trenches, supplies, aviation, tanks and artillery.
Outside, the battlefield covers 3 hectares. Open to the public since 1996, it includes more than 1,000 metres of French and German trenches restored to their original positions, with armour plating, lookout slits, barbed wire, armoured turrets, machine guns, cannons, howitzers and trench mortars. Explanatory panels in French, English and German line the route.
