Over het museum
The Musée de Millau et des Grands Causses is housed in the Hôtel de Pégayrolles, on the place Foch in the town center. The mansion was built around 1738 by Jacques Julien de Pégayrolles, a councillor of the Parlement of Toulouse from a family of Millau magistrates. Set on fire by residents in May 1791, it was left abandoned for a long time, then rebuilt and enlarged at the start of the 19th century. The town bought it in 1856 to house its town hall, which moved out in 1937. The library then occupied the building, before the museum moved in during the 1980s.
Together with the archaeological site of La Graufesenque, the museum forms the MuMiG. The route traces the history of the town and its area through five major collections: paleontology, with fossils and prints of ancient fauna and flora; protohistory; Gallo-Roman antiquity, with a wide selection of Terra Sigillata ceramics from La Graufesenque; the Middle Ages and early modern period; and tanning and glove-making, which has shaped life in Millau and the Grands Causses since the mid-Middle Ages.
A special collection is devoted to Emma Calvé, a singer from Rouergue in the Belle Époque, famous for her role as Carmen. Each year a temporary exhibition complements the permanent display. Admission to the museum is free.
