Over het museum

The Musée de Thiepval is the second site of the Historial de la Grande Guerre, run by the Somme department. The Historial has welcomed visitors in Thiepval since 2004; the current site museum opened on June 1, 2016, near the Franco-British memorial, in the heart of the Somme battlefields.

The route begins with a free welcome and interpretation centre presenting the Great War, the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and the creation of the memorial site. The museum then comprises seven spaces that are both independent and complementary: an animated map of the front from 1914 to 1918, the room devoted to the summer 1916 offensive, an area on German soldiers, another on the French and the battles of the Somme, a room for the missing, an area on the aces of aviation and an epilogue on the memorial landscape of the Somme.

The highlight is the panorama by Joe Sacco: a 60-metre-long fresco on glass that tells the story of the first day of the offensive, July 1, 1916, hour by hour. Around a central pit, objects and archaeological remains engage in dialogue with the drawn scenes.
