Over het museum
Throughout their lives, Jean and Denise Letaille, farmers in Bullecourt, gathered objects found in their fields and in the surrounding countryside. They include weapons, but also razors, combs, cigarette cases and other personal items from Australia, Germany and the United Kingdom. These objects were found on the former front line, near the men who fell during the two battles of Bullecourt, part of the Arras offensive in April and May 1917.
The museum occupies a former barn with a stable. It displays remains of trenches to tell the story of the “Diggers”, the Australian soldiers who came from the other side of the world. The route also covers the history of the First World War and the fighting at Bullecourt. The museum is run by the Communauté de communes du Sud-Artois.
