Over het museum
The Musée départemental du Sel in Marsal grew out of a Maison du Sel, an association opened in 1973 under the auspices of the Parc naturel régional de Lorraine. Since 2004 it has been a site of the Moselle département and carries the Musée de France label.
It occupies the Porte de France, a 17th-century fortification by Vauban that is listed as a historic monument. A redevelopment in 2019 renewed the reception area and the museography.
The trail presents salt production in the Saulnois, from the Iron Age to the 18th century, using digital tools and a documentary film. Notable pieces include the Leimersheim torc, a 14th-century reliquary, a Virgin and Child, a Merovingian brooch and a 3D copy of the Yutz vases. Several objects are on loan from institutions including the Musée d’Archéologie nationale, the Musée de la Cour d’Or, the Palais des ducs de Lorraine and the British Museum.
