Over het museum

The Porte Saint-Michel was built around 1440–1450, completing the fortifications of Guérande, which had been begun about a century and a half earlier. It is both a fortified gate and a residence: on the outside, two massive towers, a drawbridge and a portcullis protected it; on the town side, the open façade with its wide bays housed the residence of the town captain, the military representative of the Duke of Brittany. The building later served as a garrison, as a prison during the Revolution, and as the town hall from 1815 to 1954. It has been a listed monument since 1889.

The museum was founded in 1928 by Edmond Bertho, an antiques dealer from Guérande, who gave his collections to the town in 1930. Initially housed in part of the monument, it has occupied the entire building since 1954, after the town hall moved out. Management was entrusted to the Amis du Guérande association until 2005, after which the town took it over. It has held the “Musée de France” label since 2003.

The collections include more than 2,500 historical, ethnographic and artistic objects: archaeological items, paintings, prints, photographs, textiles, coins and everyday objects of the Guérande region. As the building’s climate is too damp for a permanent display, these pieces are shown on rotation in two temporary exhibitions a year. The visit also includes the upper floors of the monument, with their spiral staircases and fireplaces, and part of the ramparts.
