Over het museum

The Maison des Paludiers is in Saillé, a village on the edge of the Guérande salt marshes, in the commune of Guérande. The site is run by the City of Guérande and explains the work of the paludiers, the workers who harvest sea salt in the basins of the marsh.

The village of Saillé is mentioned as early as the 11th century. Its former name, Saliacum, refers to salt production. It grew in importance when Duke John IV of Brittany and Joan of Navarre married there in 1386. Its lanes are lined with granite houses with slate roofs, some dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The visit begins with a projection on a model that explains how the salt marshes are formed. It continues through the village lanes, along the salt pans and, if the weather allows, into a salt pan itself. A documentary film on the work of the paludiers through the four seasons completes the discovery.

Goed om te wetenVisits are by guide only, as the salt pans are private land; the village of Saillé can be visited freely. The walk is 1.2 km long and includes the screening of a 25-minute film. In case of rain, an alternative route with a 3D model and film is provided. English-language visits take place twice a week in summer; for other languages, the model has subtitles and an audio guide is available for the film. Closed shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.
