Over het museum
The museum is devoted to Eugène Le Roy, a regionalist writer and the author of “Jacquou le croquant”, who is one of the notable figures of Montignac. His library and the furniture of his study were bequeathed to the town of Montignac, which entrusted their management and conservation to the tourist office. The museum has held the “Musée de France” label since 2003.
The collections include the writer’s study and figures representing the main characters of his work, dressed according to his descriptions: miller, barrel-hoop maker, clog maker, sawyer, cooper and blacksmith. They also show the costumes, housing, furniture, trades and tools of earlier times.
The museum occupies the former Saint-Jean-l’Évangéliste hospital, built in the 13th and 14th centuries. It was later used by the gendarmerie, then by the Syndicat d’initiative from 1967, and by the tourist office since 1996.
