Over het museum
It had long been known that the right bank of the Rhône, opposite Vienne, had been inhabited in Roman times, but only a few isolated villas were imagined there. In 1967, a large excavation carried out before the construction of a lycée revealed an entire residential quarter of the Roman colony of Vienna, with luxurious houses, baths, shops, workshops and warehouses. The site was later acquired by the Département du Rhône and listed as a historic monument in 1983.
Programmed excavations were carried out without interruption from 1981 to 2001. They uncovered a large monumental complex from the 1st century, on which one of the largest known funerary monuments in Gaul was built in the 4th century.
To preserve, study and display this discovery, the Département had an on-site museum built, which opened in 1996. The architects Philippe Chaix and Jean-Paul Morel designed two contemporary buildings that rise above the remains, with a total floor area of more than 12,000 m².
The museum’s inventory includes nearly 3,950 objects, among them mosaics, wall paintings, statues and many objects in ceramic, bone, glass and metal. Some 1,160 pieces are shown in the permanent display. The museum bears the label “Musée de France” and remains a place of research, as excavations continue every year.
