Over het museum
The Gatien-Bonnet museum was founded in Lagny-sur-Marne in 1865 by Dr Gatien-Bonnet, mayor of the town from 1860 to 1875, and opened in 1868 in a room of the town hall. It moved in 1961 to the former house of Dr Paul d’Halluin and reopened in 1988 after renovation work. It closed in Lagny in 2021; since January 2022, its collections have been housed at the Rentilly château in Bussy-Saint-Martin, which has become the intercommunal museum of the Communauté d’agglomération de Marne et Gondoire.
The château was built at the beginning of the 16th century, rebuilt at the end of the 18th century and transformed in the 19th century by the Thuret, André and Menier families. Rebuilt after a fire in 1944, it was bought by Marne et Gondoire in 2001. The Parc culturel de Rentilly – Michel Chartier was inaugurated in September 2006; the château’s facade was clad in a mirror skin by the artist Xavier Veilhan.
The museum holds the “Musée de France” label and has joined the Môm’Art charter for welcoming children and families. On the third floor of the château, the permanent collection shows the most emblematic works, along with a mediation area for young visitors. Exhibitions of ancient and contemporary art, meetings with artists and concerts punctuate the year in a park of around fifty hectares.
