Over het museum

The Hôtel-Dieu de Tournus is a former hospital built in the 17th century and extended until the end of the 18th century. It has been a listed historic monument since 1964. Its three large patient wards and two chapels have been restored with their original furnishings, notably the box beds (lits clos) in oak around a central stove, to recreate the atmosphere of hospital life in former times.

The apothecary room, dating from around 1685, is among the oldest surviving in France. Its ornate wood panelling holds about 300 Nevers faience jars. In 2011 a second apothecary room, that of the Maison de Charité in Tournus, dating from 1675, was reinstalled in the complex. A medicinal plant garden completes the visit and recalls the pharmaceutical practices of the time, while display cases show historic medical instruments.

The building also housed the Musée Greuze, the town’s museum of fine arts and archaeology, organised around the work of the painter Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725–1805). According to the town, the Musée Greuze is now closed to the public; only the hospital museum can be visited. The Hôtel-Dieu is part of the Réseau des Hôtels-Dieu et Apothicaireries.
