Over het museum

The Musée d'Art et d'Histoire is in the heart of Colombes, in a group of restored old buildings near the church and town hall. It presents varied collections that trace episodes of the town's history, a place rich in events and personalities. Alongside the permanent collection it organises temporary exhibitions, some of which are created each year with the Communal Archives.

Under the Ancien Régime, Colombes welcomed Queen Henrietta of England, widow of Charles I, who spent her last years there. On the Moulin Joly island, Claude-Henri Watelet laid out one of the first picturesque gardens of the Enlightenment, which can be seen in a model, as can the village of Colombes in 1780. The industrial development of the 19th and 20th centuries is illustrated by perfume bottles, telephones, models of cars and aircraft, and tyres.

The museum also tells of the town's sporting past, with the Stade Yves-du-Manoir, venue of the 1924 Olympic Games and of major French sporting events until the early 1970s. Its fine arts collection, from the 17th to the 20th century, includes drawings, paintings, prints and sculptures, with works by Gustave Bienvêtu, Asger Jorn and Victorine Meurent, Manet's model, who lived in Colombes.
