Over het museum

The museum occupies the chapel of the former priory of Vallauris. The monks of the Abbey of Lérins received the Vallauris estate in 1038 and built a castle and a chapel for the prior there. The present castle dates from a rebuilding of 1568 and houses a listed Renaissance staircase.

The chapel, with a single nave and an apse, was probably built after the middle of the 12th century and restored at the beginning of the 13th century. It was never used for worship and was later used as an oil mill. Sold as national property in 1791, it was bought by the commune of Vallauris in 1972. The priory and the chapel have been listed as historic monuments since 1951.

Picasso chose this chapel in 1959 to install his monumental work “La Guerre et la Paix”, painted in 1952, in a barrel-vaulted hall. The museum also presents “La Paix” and “Les Quatre parties du monde”. The visit can be combined with that of the Musée Magnelli, the ceramics museum, housed in the same complex.

The ticket gives access to the Musée Picasso and the Musée Magnelli, the ceramics museum. Free also for residents of Vallauris Golfe-Juan (proof of address) and for journalists with a press card. Payment by cash, French or Monegasque cheque, or Visa, Mastercard or JCB card.

A ramp can be installed on request to enter the chapel's nave, from where the work is visible but not head-on; some steps remain. At the Musée Magnelli, only part of the first floor is wheelchair accessible. The public services department offers mediation tools adapted to visual and intellectual disabilities.
