Over het museum
The Autun Natural History Museum grew out of collections gathered at the beginning of the 19th century and later held by the Société d’histoire naturelle d’Autun, founded in 1886, which owned them before they were transferred to the town. It is named after its first curator, Jacques de La Comble, and has occupied a mansion (hôtel particulier) on Rue Saint-Antoine since 1964. The museum holds the “Musée de France” label.
Its storage holds more than 800,000 objects: taxidermied animals, including over 10,000 birds, eggs and nests and more than 100,000 insects; herbaria of more than 300,000 sheets; many minerals; and tens of thousands of fossils. The Autun basin is a world reference for a period of the Palaeozoic era, and the museum holds the world's first collection of fossiliferous nodules from the continental Carboniferous, comprising 160,000 pieces.
The permanent exhibitions occupy two floors. They present the prehistory of the Autun basin, the animal and plant fossils of the region, the industrial history linked to oil shale, coal and autunite, the first dinosaur traces in the Morvan, and the minerals of the Morvan, as well as animals from the far north. A specialised library is open to all. The main entrance is now through the garden, Impasse Rollet.
