Over het museum
The Ouvrage de Bousse, designated A24, is a small infantry fortification (ouvrage) of the Maginot Line, built from 1931 to 1935 in the Bousse woods at Hestroff in Moselle. It comprises an entrance block and three combat blocks (one observation post and two infantry casemates), linked by underground galleries to a barracks dug about 20 meters deep. Its theoretical garrison numbered 138 men and 4 officers.
In June 1940 the fort was spared from fighting. After an evacuation order, the crew sabotaged the equipment on the night of June 16 to 17 and left; they were captured a few days later. In the 1950s the army restored the fort. From 1956 it belonged to the Boulay fortified sector, and it was decommissioned by decree in July 1971.
Since 1998 the association “Fort aux Fresques” has maintained and restored the fort and runs guided tours. The site is known for the humorous murals in the barracks, which depict life in the garrison with Mickey Mouse, officers and sayings, as well as for the names given to the galleries. The association also looks after the nearby shelters X29 and X30.
