Over het museum

The small Ouvrage du Bambesch, numbered A 35, was built between 1931 and 1935 in the Faulquemont fortified sector, in the Bambesch wood near Bambiderstroff. It has three combat blocks linked by galleries dug more than twenty metres deep, and could house a garrison of about 110 men.

In June 1940, after the troops of the intervalle withdrew, the works was attacked by the German army. On June 20, an 88 mm gun destroyed Block 2; the commander, faced with a critical situation, decided to surrender. In November 1944, American fire again damaged Block 3 during the advance towards Saint-Avold.

After the war, the commune of Bambiderstroff bought the works back. Opened to the public in 1974, it is considered the first Maginot Line works accessible to visitors. Visits were first run by the village firefighters; they were later taken over by the Association des Guides du Bambesch, which organises them today.
