Over het museum
The Ouvrage de Rohrbach, also known as Fort Casso, was built between 1934 and 1938 on the plateau of Rohrbach-lès-Bitche, less than ten kilometres from the German border. The original plan called for more blocks, but budget restrictions limited the works to three surface blocks, linked to a small underground town dug about 25 metres deep.
In June 1940, a garrison of around 175 men under Captain de Saint-Ferjeux resisted German attacks and covered the withdrawal of French troops. The works surrendered on June 22, 1940, after the armistice. Lieutenant Casso, an engineering officer, gave the fort its name.
Today the Fort Casso association maintains the works, gradually restores it to its 1940 condition and organises visits. The route leads from the barracks and power plant to the ammunition stores, then to a combat block where a 135-tonne turret can be operated.
