Over het museum
The Meisenthal glassworks was founded in 1704 in the Northern Vosges and produced large quantities of utilitarian glassware. Between 1867 and 1894, Émile Gallé carried out his experiments here, which makes it a cradle of Art Nouveau glass. At its height, the factory employed up to 650 people; it closed on 31 December 1969.
The beginnings of the glass museum date back to 1978. After several stages of reconversion of the site, the Centre international d’art verrier (CIAV) opened in 1992 in the former cutting workshop. As a public institution, it aims to preserve the region’s technical heritage and to connect traditional glassmaking expertise with contemporary creation and industry.
Today, the site offers visits to the former glassworks, exhibitions, a shop and activities for young audiences. It is also known for its hand-blown glass Christmas baubles and its hot-glass workshops.
