Over het museum
The Hôtel d’Heidelbach is a mansion on the Avenue d’Iéna, built in 1913 by the architect René Sergent for the American banker Alfred Heidelbach. The state acquired it in the 1950s, and it has since been attached to the nearby Musée national des arts asiatiques – Guimet.
The site first presented the Buddhist figures that Émile Guimet had brought back from his 1876 trip to Japan, under the name Panthéon bouddhique. It was then devoted to imperial Chinese furniture of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Since 2001, the Japanese-style garden has housed a tea pavilion designed by Nakamura Masao, where ceremonies and tastings take place.
After a major renovation carried out with the designer Constance Guisset, the mansion reopened on May 23, 2026 under the name Maison Guimet. The route has been redesigned to improve the flow of light and visitors. It presents Chinese ceremonial furniture, a space devoted to the arts of tea in China and Japan, and the garden with its pavilion.
