Over het museum

The Hafnarfjörður local heritage museum had its formal start at a town council meeting in January 1953, and a local heritage committee was elected in April of the same year. One reason was a fear that objects from the town would be lost if they were not collected by a recognised museum. From the start the plan was to house the museum in Sívertsen House on Vesturgata, which Bjarni Sívertsen had built in 1803–1805 and which is the oldest house in Hafnarfjörður. The house was renovated and opened as a museum in 1974, as part of the celebrations of the 1100th anniversary of the settlement of Iceland.

In 1989 Siggubær was added as an exhibition house. The seaman Erlendur Marteinsson built it in 1902, and his daughter Sigríður Erlendsdóttir lived there until 1978. She bequeathed the house to the museum. It shows how a working-class family in Hafnarfjörður lived in the first half of the 20th century.

The museum now has exhibitions in several historic houses in the town and three outdoor exhibitions that are always open. In the Warehouse at Vesturgata 6 there are usually three exhibitions running: a permanent exhibition on the town's history, a toy exhibition in the attic, and a theme exhibition. Beggubúð is a museum of trade heritage. Admission to the museum is free, and groups can book museum education all year round.
