Over het museum

Hafnarborg was founded on 1 June 1983, on the 75th anniversary of the town's charter. The founders were the pharmacy owner Sverrir Magnússon and the pharmacist Ingibjörg Sigurjónsdóttir, who gave the town the property at Strandgata 34 together with artworks and books. They wanted the house to be a cultural institution with an art collection, exhibition halls, a guest studio and facilities for concerts. The name comes from a shop the couple ran for a time alongside the pharmacy. The museum was formally opened on 21 May 1988.

The old house was designed by Guðjón Samúelsson and was completed in 1921 as a pharmacy and dwelling house. Sverrir and Ingibjörg ran Hafnarfjarðarapótek (Hafnarfjörður Pharmacy) there from 1947 to 1984. Today Hafnarborg consists of three parts: the old house, a large extension from the 1980s by the architect Ingimar H. Ingimarsson, and the Sverrissalur exhibition hall, which opened in 1990. In the old pharmacy on the ground floor is a multi-purpose hall called Apótekið (The Pharmacy).

The collection holds about 1,600 artworks, including paintings, drawings, prints, video works and outdoor sculptures. The founding gift comprised almost 200 works, including pieces by Kjarval, Nína Tryggvadóttir, Jóhann Briem and Júlíana Sveinsdóttir. The activities consist of exhibitions of contemporary art, concerts and education, and the house has facilities for visiting artists.
