Over het museum
Bustarfell in Hofsárdalur in Vopnafjörður is a family seat where the same family has lived for almost five hundred years. Árni Brandsson and Úlfheiður bought the farm in 1532, and their descendants have owned it ever since. The old turf farmhouse, with its red gables and grass-covered roof, is considered one of the oldest and best preserved in Iceland.
The museum shows how farming and daily life changed from the first half of the 18th century to the middle of the 20th century. It includes three kitchens from different periods, which show the technological advances in homes. The farm was inhabited until 1966. The state has owned and maintained the old farmhouse since 1943, while the furnishings belong to the people of Vopnafjörður.
Next to the museum is the café Hjáleigan. A walking path leads from the farm to Álfkonusteinn, a stone linked to a local legend, and there is a panoramic viewpoint on the mountain above the farm.
