Over het museum

For many centuries Nospelt was Luxembourg’s most important pottery village. Its potters made tableware, jugs and decorated vessels that were known well beyond the country’s borders. With industrialization and competition from factory-made goods, such as from the Reckenthal faience factory, the craft lost importance in the early 20th century.

The museum occupies the former residence and workshop of Nicolas Schneider, the village’s last professional potter, on Rue des Potiers. The largest and best-preserved pottery kiln in Luxembourg is still there today and forms the heart of the house. In 1973, teacher and hobby potter Ed Kandel, together with members of the Syndicat d’Initiative Nospelt, founded the association “Amis du Musée de la Poterie et de l’Artisanat de Nospelt” (AMPA), which aimed to preserve the knowledge of Nospelt pottery and make it accessible.

The collection includes historic tools and pottery as well as the international collection of Péckvillercher, bird-shaped clay whistles closely tied to the traditional Emaischen market. Guided visits show school groups, other groups and history enthusiasts how work was done in the past and how a potter’s family lived.
