Over het museum
The documentation centre was set up in 2008 in an annex to Echternach Basilica. It is located at the end of the left aisle, just before the stairs down to the crypt, and is run by the Willibrord building association (Oeuvre Saint-Willibrord).
A large painting by the artist Lucien Simon, created for the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris, hangs in the entrance area. Panels explain the Dancing Procession: the account by Abbot Berno of Reichenau around the year 1000, the course of the procession, the dance step and its meaning. Further panels tell the eventful history of the basilica. The texts are in German; French translations are available at the sales counter.
Display cases show devotional objects, an old statue and a reliquary that present St. Willibrord as a popular saint; two films complement the texts. In the adjoining corridors is a lapidarium with fragments of tombs from the former abbey church. The centre also protects the quiet of the church, as visitor groups receive the information they need here.
