Over het museum
The museum opened in 1984 in the Hihof, a 15th-century Gothic building in central Echternach next to the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, at the corner of Rue du Pont. Over the centuries, the house served various purposes: as an agricultural outbuilding of the hospice, as a pottery workshop, and in the 19th century as a school.
The collection presents finds from prehistory and early history, mainly from Luxembourg, Northern Europe and France. About 30 display cases hold stone tools such as arrowheads, axes, daggers and grinding stones, along with skulls, reconstructions and video presentations. A few pieces also come from North America, Africa and Papua New Guinea.
