Over het museum
On June 14, 1985, five countries signed the Schengen Agreement aboard the Moselle ship “Princesse Marie-Astrid,” which today is part of the museum as “Prinzessin Marie-Astrid Europa.” The managing organization, Centre Européen Schengen a.s.b.l., was founded in 2004 to promote regional tourism and the spirit of the Schengen Agreements. In 2017, the village received the European Heritage Label.
After about 15 years of operation, the museum was completely redesigned in 2024/2025 and reopened on June 14, 2025, the 40th anniversary of the agreement. The immersive exhibition is trilingual (French, English, German) and is divided into four parts: Europe of borders, from vision to reality, the borders of Schengen, and the Schengen myth. In the “Cube,” people share their personal stories about borders.
The restored ship, which is 40.5 meters long and electrically powered, is part of the visit; in the signing room, a multimedia installation features archive images and eyewitness accounts. Outdoors, the 1997 Schengen Monument, made of three steel columns, and two segments of the Berlin Wall commemorate the theme.
