Over het museum
The museum goes back to the collectors Gaby and Prosper Kayser-Gales, who were passionate about local history and everyday objects. In 1965 they bought the Possenhaus in Bech-Kleinmacher, whose origins go back to 1617; it first opened to visitors in 1967. The family later acquired more houses and added them to the museum.
In 1972, the association “Les Amis du Possenhaus et du Folklore Mosellan” was founded, and in 1977 the Wäistuff A Possen opened. Since 1993, the Fondation Possenhaus has run the museum under an agreement with the Tourism Directorate and the municipality of Schengen. In 2018, a new museum concept was developed through a participatory process with stakeholders from tourism, culture and the region.
The museum shows the social and craft life of the Moselle residents in the 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as local winegrowing. Among the objects on display are a candle mold, a canopy bed, a bread oven, a flax comb, a shoemaker’s hammer, a magic lantern and a woven beehive.
