Over het museum

The Musée FERRUM is an annex to the Schungfabrik cultural centre in Tétange, in the municipality of Kayl. The centre occupies a former shoe factory: Mathias Hubert founded a shoe-making and repair workshop in 1880; the first factory building was erected in 1912–13, and the building on rue Pierre Schiltz followed in 1917. The Hubert family produced miners’ boots, among other things. After the family withdrew in 1964, the company went bankrupt in 1966. In 1980 the municipality bought the building; in 1984 it was listed as a monument, and in 1990 it opened as a cultural centre.

Construction of the new museum began in November 2019; the opening took place on December 3, 2021, as part of the programme of the European Capital of Culture Esch2022. The building combines a gallery for travelling exhibitions, a multipurpose room for educational workshops and a museum area on local history.

The museum area covers the municipality’s history from the Stone Age to the present, the industrial history of the 19th and 20th centuries with heavy-industry suppliers (such as the mine wagons “Buggies” and carbide lamps made in Kayl and Tétange), the Hubert shoe factory with its daily life and club activities, and mining and workers’ history. Also featured are the transport of ore and the “Minettswee” hiking trail. In the same building, the MUAR – Musée vun der Aarbecht presents an exhibition on the theme of work, and the painter Emile Kirscht has his own exhibition space.
