Over het museum
The Regional Museum of the Forced Conscripts is a museum of the town of Dudelange. It is located at 25, rue Dominique Lang and commemorates the young Luxembourgers who were drafted into the German Wehrmacht against their will during the Second World War. According to the exhibition panels, the German occupation administration introduced conscription in Luxembourg in August 1942; by autumn 1944 a total of around 11,000 young men had been called up.
The exhibition covers the period from 1940 to the present. It shows historical documents, photographs, letters, propaganda material and military equipment. The panels describe, among other things, the Wehrmacht’s invasion, the bombing of Dudelange, propaganda, arrests and police terror, the forced conscription itself, the strike and the reprisals, deportation and concentration camps, as well as draft resisters and Luxembourgers who served in the Allied forces.
Further panels are devoted to the liberation, the Ardennes Offensive, the return of prisoners of war and the postwar period, including the association “Ons Jongen” and the memorials to the forced conscripts. Explanations of the exhibition are available as a PDF in French and German on the town’s website.
