Over het museum

The history of the abbey begins in 1588, when a parchment written in three languages, an image of the Virgin and bones attributed to Saint James were found in the Torre Turpiana. In 1595 kilns containing the remains of Saint Cecilius and his followers appeared on Mount Valparaíso, a discovery that changed the history of the site. Between 1595 and 1604 pilgrimages multiplied, leaving 1,200 crosses along the path to the Holy Caves, and in 1598 Archbishop Pedro de Castro founded four chaplaincies to serve the pilgrims. The relics were recognised as authentic in 1600, and in 1609 work began, entrusted to the Jesuit brother Pedro Sánchez.

The complex brings together the Holy Caves and their catacombs, the Baroque church of the Assumption, the abbey house or collegiate church of San Cecilio, the Old College and the New College, and a 19th-century seminary. One of the first university colleges in Europe was founded here in 1610. Of the planned cloister, only one of the four courtyards was built, with Tuscan columns and round arches.

The museum, located on one side of the courtyard, holds a picture gallery with works by Sánchez Cotán, Pedro de Raxis, Herrera the Elder, Luca Giordano and Goya, among others, as well as numerous images by sculptors such as Pedro Duque Cornejo, Alonso de Mena and José Risueño. Together with the Alhambra and the Cathedral, the abbey forms one of the three sites that help to explain Granada, and it remains a religious institution and a place of worship.
