Over het museum

Chamberí station opened in 1919 as one of the first stops on Line 1 of the Madrid Metro, between Cuatro Caminos and Sol. It was designed by the architect Antonio Palacios, who conceived it with a vault of bevelled white tiles, panels of Sevillian tiles and a ticket hall.

On 22 May 1966 it was closed because its platform, constrained by the gradient and the curve of the track, could not be lengthened for the longer trains the line required. For decades it remained closed and almost intact, and the film “Barrio” (1998) drew attention to it again.

After its restoration, it reopened in 2008 as a visitable space and interpretation centre of Metro de Madrid, known as Andén 0. The route begins at the ticket office and continues to the platform, where advertising posters from the 1920s are preserved almost as they were made. It is now managed by the Museos Metro de Madrid, and visits are always accompanied by a guide.
