Over het museum
José Lázaro Galdiano assembled his collection over more than sixty years, first in Barcelona and then in Madrid, Paris and New York. Together with his wife, Paula Florido, he promoted the construction of the Parque Florido palace, opened in 1909 on Calle de Serrano. The three collections he formed passed to the foundation that bears his name.
The works kept in New York arrived in Madrid in January 1947, and the museum opened to the public on 27 January 1951 in the palace itself, with a display designed by Fernando Chueca. Its first director was José Camón Aznar. The building and its garden are still the museum's seat today.
The collection exceeds 12,600 pieces, and the museum displays almost five thousand spread over four floors. Highlights include Spanish and European painting, with works by Goya, Velázquez, El Greco, El Bosco, Murillo and Sofonisba Anguissola; the Treasury Chamber with silverware and jewellery from the 3rd century BC to the 19th century; and the collector's cabinet with arms, textiles, coins and medals.
