Over het museum
The building of the Casa das Artes was designed in the 1930s; the architect Romualdo de Madariaga signed the project in September 1938. It is a Rationalist construction that housed a branch of the Banco de España in Vigo from 1939 until the mid-1980s, when the bank closed its offices outside provincial capitals.
The Casa das Artes opened in 1990 as the main venue for the cultural programme of Vigo City Council. It is devoted mainly to temporary exhibitions of painting, sculpture and photography, and on subjects in science, history, ethnography and society; in 2007 it presented the first exhibition in Spain of Tamara de Lempicka.
The building brings together several collections: on the ground floor, the Archivo Fotográfico Pacheco, with some 140,000 photographs of Vigo from 1879 to 1970; on the second floor, the Colección Luis Torras, with works donated and deposited by this painter; and on the third floor, the Fundación Laxeiro, with the work of the painter José Otero Abeledo, “Laxeiro”, and exhibitions of contemporary artists.
