Over het museum
The Huerta de San Vicente was the García Lorca family's summer estate between 1926 and 1936. It is known to have existed already in the second half of the 19th century under the name Huerta de los Mudos. In 1925 it was bought by Federico García Rodríguez, the poet's father, who renamed it in honour of his wife, Vicenta Lorca Romero. The only alteration of that period was an annexe on the ground floor, which served as a dining room, with a terrace above it.
Federico García Lorca wrote there, in whole or in part, works such as Así que pasen cinco años, Bodas de sangre, Yerma and the Diván del Tamarit, and received visits from friends such as Manuel de Falla. He also spent the days before his arrest at the estate, in the summer of 1936. After the family went into exile in 1941, the house was occupied by other people, although it remained the property of the García Lorca family.
The Ayuntamiento de Granada bought it in 1985 from Isabel García Lorca to turn it into a house-museum, which opened on 10 May 1995 inside the park dedicated to the poet. The furniture and objects were identified from photographs from 1926 to 1936 and from the recollections of family members, and the museum explains to visitors which pieces are original, which belonged to the family and which are period décor. Among them are the poet's writing desk, the gramophone and the piano. The house closed for a few months between 2017 and 2018 for improvement works.
