Over het museum

Igartubeiti is a farmhouse built in the 15th century that represents the Golden Age of the Basque caserío as few others do. Around 1630, at the beginning of the 17th century, it was enlarged and remodelled to suit new ways of living and working. It retains an original timber structure in very good condition, with single-piece posts running from the floor to the roof, and a large cider press with its beam, screw and stone, which makes it one of the most interesting farmhouses in the Basque Country.

The Diputación Foral de Gipuzkoa bought the farmhouse in 1992 to prevent its loss and undertook a restoration regarded as exemplary, with the aim of returning it to its appearance at the beginning of the 17th century. Its interior has become a museum that recreates the life of the old farmhouses, with lighting, original furniture and tools, and even the smells of the period.

To support the visit, an interpretation centre was built beneath the car park so as not to disturb the view of the farmhouse. There the history of the Basque farmhouses over more than a thousand years is told through the voices of the family and neighbours of Igartubeiti. The farmhouse, the interpretation centre, the organic vegetable garden and the surroundings together form the Caserío Museo Igartubeiti, which turned 25 in August 2026.
