Over het museum
The Chao Samartín castro (hillfort), in Castro (Grandas de Salime), is one of the key sites for understanding the origins of the fortified settlements of western Asturias. It was identified as a castro in 1967 and has been excavated since 1990, with regular campaigns from 1995. It is declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (asset of cultural interest).
Occupation began in the Bronze Age: around 800 BC a first fortified settlement of a ritual character was built on the top of the hill, and it was destroyed in the middle of the 7th century BC. Later the settlement became an important Roman administrative capital, until a strong earthquake ruined it in the middle of the 2nd century AD. After that period the place was used as a cemetery between the 9th and 14th centuries.
The museum opened on 28 April 2007 on a slope near the site and offers panoramic views of the castro. It was promoted by the Consejería de Cultura y Turismo of the Principality of Asturias, while Grandas de Salime city council was responsible for its construction and is its owner. The permanent exhibition explains the origin and evolution of the castros of western Asturias, with pieces from Chao Samartín itself and from nearby sites such as Os Castros de Taramundi and Monte Castrelo de Pelóu. The site can only be visited on a guided tour that leaves from the museum.
