Over het museum
The Antequera dolmens form a prehistoric megalithic necropolis whose monuments have been known continuously since they were built. Menga, the most famous, was always open, and its name first appears in writing in a letter from the bishop of Málaga dated 1530. Viera and the El Romeral tholos were discovered at the beginning of the 20th century: the first in 1903 and the second in 1904.
The finds attracted prehistorians such as Gómez-Moreno, Obermaier and the Leisner couple. Menga and Viera were declared National Monuments in 1923, and El Romeral a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931. Since 1985 the Junta de Andalucía has been responsible for their protection and dissemination and promotes research projects with Andalusian universities; between 2004 and 2007 the new excavation of Menga made it possible to rediscover its well. In 2026 the tenth anniversary of the site's declaration as a World Heritage Site is being commemorated.
The complex is divided into two enclosures about 3 km apart: the first with Menga and Viera, and the second with El Romeral, a corbelled-dome tholos (false dome) with a corridor and two circular chambers. The visit begins at the on-site museum of Llano de Rojas, which complements the visit to the monuments with information on the landscape and on the settlements of those who built them.
