Over het museum
The CosmoCaixa Science Museum belongs to the banking foundation “la Caixa” and is considered one of Europe's pioneering science museums. Before opening in 1980, the organisation carried out studies with visitors to check the effectiveness of the modules it planned to install, an evaluation work it has continued to practise ever since.
The museum opened under the name CosmoCaixa in 2004. It occupies a complex in the Sant Gervasi district that retains much of the original modernist building, now integrated into its surroundings. The centre also presents itself as a “green building” that shows the public its environmental improvements.
The heart of the visit is the Sala Universo, an interactive route that starts with the Big Bang and reaches the human brain. Around it are the Bosque Inundado, which reproduces a fragment of the Amazon rainforest; the Restos y Rastros area, dedicated to fossils and fossilisation; the Base Antártica, with the original laboratory of the Juan Carlos I base; the Muro Geológico, made up of seven large rock blocks; and the Lab Math mathematics laboratory.
The museum also has a planetarium, workshops, lectures and a wide range of activities for schools and families.
