Over het museum

The Ecomuseo Minero Valle de Samuño opened in 2013 following a popular initiative by the valley's residents. It recovers the industrial heritage around the mining village of La Nueva, in the municipality of Langreo, and forms part of the Protected Landscape of the Mining Basins of Asturias.

The focus of the visit is the mining train, which leaves from El Cadavíu station and runs along the old coal road beside the Samuño river, through chestnut woods. For more than a kilometre the route passes through the Socavón Emilia, a 19th-century mountain mine, and visitors go down to 32 metres, to the first level of the Pozo San Luis, from where a cage takes them back up to the surface.

The Pozo San Luis was deepened between 1928 and 1930 by Carbones de La Nueva (Real Compañía Asturiana de Minas), stopped working in 1969 and in 2013 was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Cultural Interest Asset) in the category of Historic Ensemble. In the Casa de Aseos (the miners' washhouse) next to the shaft is the interpretation centre for the protected landscape, from which routes and trails set out.
