Over het museum
The Minimuseo Zabalza is a small family ethnographic collection housed inside a hórreo in Zabalza, in the municipality of Urraúl Alto. The hórreo, a granary raised on pillars, was built at the Casa Estoki, belonging to the Isturiz family, to keep food and grain away from damp and rodents, and its door bears an inscription dated 1614 or 1674.
When it ceased to be used for that purpose, its owners, Mari Fe Isturiz Eseberri and Javier Urbiola Goñi, restored it, gathered and catalogued traditional objects, and decided to open it to the public to explain how people lived and worked in the Urraúl valley. The museum was made known at the European Heritage Days of 2019 and was subsequently presented on the occasion of International Museum Day.
The collection numbers more than two hundred objects: farm tools, lanterns, bed warmers, irons and radios, used in the fields, in the kitchen and for personal grooming.
