Over het museum

Since 1999 the museum has occupied the former Dominican convent of the Madre de Dios, founded by doña María de Mendoza and built in several phases between the 17th and 18th centuries opposite the archbishop's palace. In 1882 the City Council bought the building to convert it into a prison and courthouse, and the lantern and spire of the church were removed for fear of collapse. When restoration began, the building was in a very poor state.

In 1985, when responsibility for archaeology was transferred to the autonomous communities, the administrations agreed to turn the convent into the Regional Archaeological Museum. Works began in 1987, the decree of creation came in 1997, and the museum opened on 25 May 1999. The permanent exhibition opened in 2003, and the Patio de Cristales, the former cloister converted into an auditorium and multipurpose room, in 2007. An extension completed in 2020 increased the space by 50% and gave the museum a new palaeontology room.

The centre holds the materials from the archaeological and palaeontological excavations of the Community of Madrid and promotes its own projects, such as the Llano de la Horca site in Santorcaz and the Valle de los Neandertales Archaeological Park in Pinilla del Valle.
