Over het museum

Castillo de la Alameda is a manorial fortress built in the 15th century in the former village of La Alameda, today in the Barajas district of Madrid. It passed by inheritance to the Zapata family, counts of Barajas, who in 1575 converted it into a Renaissance palace with a garden in the old moat.

At the end of the 17th century a fire ruined it, and it was then used as a quarry for other buildings in the area. During the Civil War a machine-gun nest was installed beside it, part of the defensive system of the nearby El Capricho park. In 1988 and 1989 the surviving structures were consolidated, and from 1996 excavations uncovered settlements dating from the Bronze Age to the Roman period.

Today the castle is owned by Madrid City Council and has served as a visitor space for the municipal museums since 2010. Part of the main body, a round tower and the moat have survived, and the route includes viewpoints with explanatory panels on the history and function of each element.
